Sympathy for the Devil’s Advocate

Why challenging your own work is essential to great design.

In a world where audiences are bigger, more diverse, and more vocal, simply empathizing with others isn't enough. Designers today need to actively challenge their own work—playing Devil’s Advocate not just for critique’s sake, but to uncover blind spots before others do.

We all know the feeling: the spark of pride when a design finally clicks. But that moment can easily cloud judgment. You may love what you made...but will the client? Will their audience? Are you solving their problem or flexing your own aesthetic?

Ask yourself the tough questions:
Does this design unintentionally resemble something else?
Could it be misread, misunderstood, or even offend?
Is it truly on-brand—or just on-trend?

Turning a critical eye inward is tough, especially when you’re proud of the work. But it’s part of the job. Be your own first line of defense. Invite feedback from your team. Listen. Adjust. Repeat. Your work—and your client—deserve that level of care.

Looking for that level of care? Explore logos and design work that have gone through the ringer and made it out the other side. When you're ready, let's discuss your next project.
